Whining

I know, the title of the blog is "musings", but today I feel like whining. Work has been very challenging lately. I haven't been able to even think about my promotion to Early Literacy Librarian. We are down staff and just found out someone else is leaving. My schedule for the department has some huge holes. I had a program this week and another one in two weeks, which I havn't done any planning for. Plus I need to plan fall storytimes and special programs and we are supposed to come up with ideas for winter/spring special programs. I haven't even touched the huge pile of mending I have to go through. And it was very disheartening to find out two of our summer volunteers stole some of the summer reading prizes. To top it off I have to work 2 nights this week. I am so ready for the weekend.

Lily Hates Thunderstorms

This is Lily. Lily is a dog. Most of the time Lily is a happy dog, but not during thunderstorms. When it thunders Lily barks and digs at the kitchen door. She has pulled the molding off and even cut her paw. We're not sure whether she is afraid of the noise of the thunder or the flash of lightning. We are trying to find ways to make the storms less traumatic for her.
We have tried closing the drapes, playing the radio (loudly), offering treats, getting the diffusers that supposedly give off calming vapors and sleeping on the couch with her at night with a blanket over her head. Anyone have any other suggestions????

I Killed the Walkman...

I killed another walkman last night. The circumstances were similar to other Walkman deaths I've been involved in--a fall from a height of 3-4 feet, cracking the cover to the battery. I was able to prolong the life of the previous Walkman with the strategic use of masking tape. The masking tape would hold in the battery, but would have to be dislodged everytime I needed to change the cassette tape. Then there was the struggle to replace the masking tape so that the battery cover would remain closed. Unfortunately the current Walkman died instantaneously.

I hear you saying, "Why in the world would anyone be using a Walkman in this day & age?" You can listen to BOCD on your computer (not portable, have to fight with the rest of the family for computer time, computer chair not comfortable); mp3 player (involves having to read directions on how to download a book, can't find instruction manual); CD player (currently used by older daughter to listen to her BOCD).

Besides the low-techness of the Walkman was its biggest plus. It fit perfectly into my jacket pocket. Just drop the tape in and push play. I will miss my Walkman. It got me through library school (how else are you going to read all those YA novels?). Walking the dog at 5:30 am = 14 Aubrey/Maturin novels, numerous mysteries, Harry Potter and Jack Keroack.

I guess its time to learn how to use the mp3 player. On the other hand, maybe I'll swing by Target because I don't think the rest of the Aubrey/Maturin novels are available as downloadable books....

Something New

A blog (an abridgment of the term web log) is a website, usually maintained by an individual, with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video.
I've been exploring the web using the 23 Things project sponsored by the PLCMC library. This week the assignment is to create a blog. I have been enjoying reading posts by other bloggers. I'm not sure I have any great pearls of wisdom to send out to everyone, but I'm up for learning new things and having a bit of fun.
